How To-sday | Put Your Punches to Use

Today we have another How To-sday from our design team member Kristy Mackeen. I love her ideas on how we can use some of our old punches.

Design Team Fall/Winter

Hi! I’m sure I’m not the only one that has 1 or 2 punches that are just sitting on the rack, not getting used. I thought I would dust a few off and create some little folded over elements for projects I’ve been working on. You can use this technique with all different shaped punches. I have two different ones to show you today.

First up is a Tab punch. I seem to have collected a bunch of different pocket style cards... It is BEYOND time to get them organized, so to do this, I decided to create some little tabs so I know what collections they are all from.

To begin this project, I started by collecting a bunch of scraps from my scrap drawer.

I picked out a few smaller scraps and folded them in half. When you put the paper into the punch, be careful to leave a small gap between the very edge of the punch and the folded edge of the paper. (I had to pull the back off this particular punch to see where I was lining the paper up.) Leaving the gap will leave the fold intact and create your folded punch element.

Then it was as simple as writing the label on my tab and stapling it over some cardboard. I like the idea of having the folded tab to provide extra strength as I’m flipping through my cards.

Another punch I grabbed was a banner punch. I used the same steps as above to create some cute little flags and banners.

The flags were made by placing a toothpick in the fold of the banner to create a flag. I used the holes in a doily to hold the flags onto the card. Another way to use these cute little folded over flags is to create a banner, by hanging them on some twine.

Go grab some of your punches, fold some paper in half, and give it a try! I can’t wait to see what you create.

Now back to creating more tabs for my cards…

Thanks Kristy, I love to find new uses for punches I have had for a while! Come back tomorrow for the next installment of our Rose Mid Week Mojo!
