How To-sday | Making & Using Molding Paste on Layouts

Today we have another How To-sday from our design team member Kristy MacKeen.

Design Team Fall/Winter

Hi! It’s Kristy. Have you heard about this stuff, called molding paste, which is being used on a lot of projects recently? I was inspired to try it after seeing some amazing layouts by my fellow Design Team member, Charissa Miller. I love the extra dimensional look that it gives to layouts. I am going to show you how I used it with some of my masks.

Recently, I went to the store to buy some and nearly had sticker shock at the price. A little goes a long way, but YIPES! Then another friend of mine mentioned she had a “recipe” homemade molding paste. I thought, “A ha!” I have most of these items at home and I can make this for a fraction of the cost of buying it at the store (saving me a little money so I can get some of that October Afternoon Daily Flash available today here on scrapbookSTEALS!).

Here is the recipe for homemade molding paste:

Mix it together and keep it in an airtight container. If it gets too thick, you can add a little water to get it back to the consistency you want.

And now on to how I used it on my Iolite 2 layout…

It was a pretty quick process to get the design on the left side of this layout:

The mask I was using on this layout had an adhesive backing to it. If the mask you are working it doesn’t have them (and most don’t), you can tape them down with a little washi tape. Also, if you have a mask with multiple images, mask off the ones you don’t want with some washi. This will allow you a little more freedom when spreading the paste. I used a frosting spreader I got in a cookie decorating kit to apply my paste, but you can use a paint or foam brush. Just remember, there is acrylic paste in the mix and don’t use your favorite tool.

The mix I made was a simple white molding paste. You can add color to the actual paste, or you can color over the dried paste. Here is a close up of my molding paste, after I brushed watercolors over them.

And here is another layout I used with the molding paste and misting sprays.

I hope I was able to give you some new ideas using products you have around your house.
