How To-sday | Gift Magnet Boards

Today’s How To-sday by Winter Design Team member Lisa Spiegels is a such a cute gift idea! I love how it can be adapted for whomever and whichever occasion you choose. And for an added bonus, you can use up all those scraps you have lying around! I love the My Mind’s Eye ‘Follow your heart’ collection and the way she mixed and matched products.

Hello everyone!  I am so excited to have my first post here on the Scrapbook Steals blog!   I’m Lisa Spiegel and I am thrilled to be sharing my scrappy creations here for Scrapbook Steals.
Today I’d like to share with you one of my favorite “scrap” projects.  I’ve made many of these sweet little magnet boards for gifts..they come together very easily and are perfect for the “scraps” from your last project.  They are a great size for Instagram, Polaroid or Fuji pictures, too!

It’s fun to make them themed, for teachers gifts, hostess presents, teen presents, and more!  In this case, I had some leftovers from My Minds Eye Follow Your Heart products, some flowers I just picked up at Michaels, and some Cosmo Cricket phrases.

Step 1. I have a stash of this stuff, it’s called Metal Flashing and they sell it at Lowes and OSH in the square size, which is what we are going to use for our project. Flip your paper over and trace the flashing onto the paper, then cut it out. I prefer to keep my paper just inside the edges of the flashing so that I don’t have to sand it off.  I also think the little bit of flashing showing gives it a finished look.

Step 2. Round corners of your paper if desired and glue the paper to the flashing using glue stick. Then, using a Cropodile, punch holes 1/2 inch from the top and 2 inches in from each side.

Step 3.  Create some cute layered embellishments using lightweight cardboard or cardstock and your “scraps”.

Step 4. Add magnets to the back of each.  I used these by Basic Grey, but you can find them easily at Lowes, OSH or Michaels. Since you are only using one side, it doesn’t matter if it’s positive or negative.  These happen to be self adhesive, so just stick them on the back of your embellishment clusters and voila!  You now have magnets!

Step 5. Decorate the bottom of the board how ever you wish..

Step 6. Add some twine to the top to hang it…(maybe I should add get a manicure, too!)

And there you have it!  A cute little magnet board to give or to keep!

Monday Card Madness #36

Monday Card Madness #36

There are some times I just don’t want to have to think about the creative process, so for today’s cards I decided to open a card kit and let the instructions do the thinking for me. Making four cards from the kit was a great way to warm up my creative mojo.

I then used my warmed up creative mojo to design a card based off of the scalloped “hello” card using stickers from today’s steal, the My Minds Eye Glitter Stickers.

Rather than a sketch this week, your challenge is to use one of the first four cards as your inspiration. After creating your cards, post them to our Facebook fan page or personal blog with a link to your creation here on the blog. You will then be eligible for our monthly drawing for a little scrappy goodness. You have until July 1st at 11:59 pm MST to have your creations for June posted in order to be eligible for our monthly drawing.

It’s exciting to think of all of the cards that have been made and all of the joy that has been sent out to others. Now it’s ScrapbookSteals turn to send out a little joy to our lucky May Monday Card Madness winner. Congratulations goes out to Amy Williams and her beautiful stamped background card which was the lucky random winner.

Also, in case you missed it we are having another card swap!

Card Swap Details

  • Create 10 cards of any variety, signed on the back (we all want to know who made what).
  • Cards must include envelopes.
  • Mail the cards to our warehouse, to be received no later than June 3oth. (ScrapbookSteals, ATTN: Card Swap, 2181 S. California Ave., #400, Salt Lake City, UT  84104).
  • Email me at kristy@stealnetwork.com once your cards have shipped so that I know whose cards to be on the lookout for.
  • I will then swap the cards and return cards from ten different artists to you.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Have a great Monday and be sure to check in at the blog tomorrow at 9am for another great How To’sday!

How To’sday | Altering Thickers by Brittany Perry

How To’sday | Altering Thickers by Brittany Perry

One of ScrapbookSteals very own, Brittany Perry has done it again! This week Brittany shows us some amazing ways to alter one of our very favorite embellishments, Thickers, to suit our every scrappy need.

__________________________

I love Thickers — all of them! I have found that I often use the same ones on multiple layouts, which can get a little boring. I recently began altering Thickers to change things up a little bit. Here are a few ideas I have tried so far.

On these two sets of Thickers, I used rub-ons. It is such an easy, fast, mess free way to customize them:

On this set, I felt like the title was blending too much into the patterned paper, so I used a KI Memories stamp, a little brown ink, and added a little color and pattern.

This title just seemed a little boring to me. The layout already had paisleys on it, so I thought the KI Memories paisley stamp would be a great way to change these Thickers.

On these foam Thickers, I used some Versamark watermark ink, some Zing embossing powder, and another KI Memories stamp to add some color and glimmer.

I thought glimmer mist would be another easy way to change Thickers. On this set of yellow Thickers, I sprayed some “brick” colored glimmer mist, which I think gave the word “animal” an animal-like feel!

Some other ideas for altering Thickers include:

  • adding stickers or rhinestones
  • sanding them to remove some of the color or give them a distressed look
  • adding distress crackle paint
  • adding ink (from a colored stamp pad – I especially love
    this on white glitter Thickers)
  • draw/doodle on them with a pen or marker

I think the possibilities are endless! And you can have completely unique, one of
a kind Thickers!

Thank you so much Brittany for your amazing ideas on how to alter Thickers. Remember if you have a great idea that you’d love to see featured on How To’sday, you can send images and directions to kristy@stealnetwork.com.

Be sure to check in tomorrow for Mid Week Mojo and an amazing sketch from our June guest sketcher.

Have a great day!

Simple Cards with Dimension | Monday Card Madness #29

Simple Cards with Dimension | Monday Card Madness #29

Pure delight! There really isn’t much more to say about today’s steal, the American Crafts Dimensional Stickers.

From the moment I saw them I was dreaming about using them on cards. Honest! I love how they truly finish off a card in a breeze making it look as if you spent extra time making the effort to achieve a dimensional look.

For this week’s card sketch I had fun with lots of layers, leaving a good sized area to show off the dimensional stickers.

They were so much fun to make!

I also flipped the sketch so that I could create cards with the stickers that worked better with a vertical format.

The cards being posted to our Facebook fan page and blogs have been truly amazing. I hope that you have all also taken on the challenge of sending out joy. I know I’ve said it before, but sending out the cards I have made is truly a highlight of my week.

Also remember after creating your cards to post them to our Facebook fan page or personal blog then leave a link with your creation here on the blog in order to be eligible for our monthly drawing for a little scrappy goodness. You have until May 6th at 11:59 pm MST to have your creations posted in order to be eligible for our monthly drawing.

Be sure to check in tomorrow at 9am for another fantastic How To’sday, this time brought to you by Stephanie Umpleby. If any of you have admired her photo collages, then tomorrow you will find out exactly how she creates them.

Contest ends Friday, May 6th at 11:59 pm. Winner announced upon notification. This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook. Participation open to U.S. and Canadian residents 18 years or older.

Sticker Graffiti | Mid Week Mojo #36

Sticker Graffiti | Mid Week Mojo #36

I adore today’s steal, the Glitz rubon and sticker collections. I love being able to add some flair to my project without having to think too hard and today’s steal delivers that flair in a flash! I let the graffiti feeling of several of the collections be the drive behind my layout.

I thought it would be unique to combine lots of the different designs on the left hand side of my page to create my own graffiti wall.

I am also crazy about the little bits of bling that are on some of the Glitz stickers.

It’s a great use of multiple stickers and rubons, don’t you think?

In today’s steal there are also a bunch of stickers which are specific for titles. I love adding a title to my layout with absolutely zero effort.

Once again, you girls knocked it out of the park with last week’s creations. Every week you seem to truly go above and beyond and I can’t wait to see what you create using this week’s Mid Week Mojo.  To enter the random drawing, comment on this blog post with a link to your photo of this week’s Mojo page (a link to a photo from our Facebook fan page or personal blog) no later than Monday, April 4th at midnight.

We’d like to congratulate Jessica Laureano, the lucky random winner of Mid Week Mojo #35.

Jessica, please send us an email to service@scrapbooksteals.com with your address and we will get your prize sent out to you.

I’m going to hang up my Mid Week Mojo hat for a week and let Staci Jones take the stage next week.  I can’t wait to see what she comes up with.

Hope you have a fantastic Wednesday!
