Pebbles Walnut Grove Collection | Mid Week Mojo

Amber – Week 6 of 10

New to Mid Week Mojo? Get started here!

Pebbles Walnut Grove Collection is such a bright, fun collection perfect for boys and girls! There are flowers, chevrons, plaid, and woodgrain patterns in a rich combination of reds, blues, yellows, pinks and grays. Mix and match the papers for whatever theme you want! The embellishments are pretty cool too! SO much fun to use – a great steal for everyone!

Here is this week’s sketch:

And here is my layout.

Scrapbooking layout using Pebbles Walnut Grove Collection

I love all of the brightly colored embellishmenats that come with this collection. There are lots of banners with title phrases on them, dimensional flowers and washi tape stickers. I switched out the button on this flower so that it would coordinate with the colors on my layout. That’s something I often do to ready-made embellishments – it just personalizes your layout at the same time.

Adding dimension and texture to scrapbooking layouts

Again, I used a dimensional flower in the opposite corner for some symmetry, and more washi tape stickers. Some of the washi tape has sentiments and phrases on them, which is perfect for adding that extra note.

I also used two of the tags in the collection I removed the top part of the tag and used them as the banner, along with two more dimensional stickers that I took apart! Makes for a cute banner, with some added faux stitching!

How To-sday | Gesso It!

Today’s How To-sday comes to you from Guest Designer Kristina MacKeen. Kristina shows us what Gesso is all about! It’s certainly opened my eyes to a fun, new technique – I’ll definitely be giving this one a try! Perfect for layouts, cards, altered projects, mini albums – you name it, you can gesso it!

• • • • •

Hi! Kristy MacKeen here with a quick How’s To on using gesso with a mask. I love masks. They can be used in so many ways – with ink, with chalk, and in this case, with gesso. Gesso was used to make the sunburst pattern of my MWM-Pearl 4 layout.DIY handmade tutorial for using gesso with a maskWhat is gesso, you may be asking? Gesso is a base coat with a slight texture. It is ideal for priming canvas, wood, metal, plastic, chipboard, paper and fabric prior to painting. Gesso adds subtle texture (called “tooth”) when applied, allowing a surface to accept paint and other mediums more easily.I decided to use gesso as a masking agent because I wanted some texture in the white spaces. Also, it allowed me to ink over the outer edges of the gessoed area to give the final product a glowing look.

For this project I gathered the following items and got to work:

DIY handmade tutorial for using gesso with a mask

For this project, I *should* have used washi tape to hold down my mask, if not, be prepared to get your hands a little messy.

DIY handmade tutorial for using gesso with a mask

Using a sponge brush, I applied the gesso over the mask. I tried using a standard paint brush, but found it left bristles in the gesso. Now admittedly, I don’t have the highest quality brushes, so that could have been part of my problem. ;-) But the sponge brush gives you full coverage, very quickly

After pulling up the mask and letting the gesso dry fully, I grabbed my inks and sponge and started layering the colors over the areas covered with gesso. I allowed the inks to overlap to give the shading affect. The advantage of using this method over spraying the mask with mists, or inking directly on the mask, is the ability to go beyond the edges of the mask.

After I was done inking, I wiped the ink of the gesso using a baby wipe, leaving it white once again.

As quick and easy as that, you have a fun background for your project. And any imperfections can be covered with your picture or other embellishments. But I live by the motto that the imperfections are just a sign that something is homemade.

Give this a try! Let me know what you think!

Studio Calico Classic Calico Volume 3

Winter Design Team member Bev Code is back with us today for her final, awesome reveal! Bev got to work with the Studio Calico Classic Calico Volume 3 Collection and she shows us just how amazingly versatile this collection is. She will wow you with a mini album, a card and a layout too!

• • • • •

Hi! It’s Bev here today. I am thrilled to share what I did with the Studio Calico 6×6 pad of Clasic Calico pappers. Starting with an item I could alter, a Plaid Enterprises Magic Slide Picture Book, I recovered the whole project with the amazing choices of paper that mixed and matched. It was perfect color hues for Ancestry and Old Family Photos.

DIY handmade mini album using SC Classic Calico Vol 3
On the inside flip pages I used some punching, minimal layers, shapes, strips, borders and cute accents finished off pages. On the outside however I used a few more textured and depth accents, and added the titles to front and back. The outer edges of the project needed paint to finish off the edges. Clear SRM stickers are the best ever for any project and so easy to use. This little slide photo album is my ancestry and it shares three generations with grandparents on both my mom and dad’s side of the family. What a treasure and I enjoyed sharing it with you.

My layout started with a Kraft 12×12 base and then I used the 6×6 pad of Studio Calico. It is amazing what you can do with these small pads. They are not just for cards anymore.

My Mind’s Eye The Sweetest Thing Tangerine Collection | Mid Week Mojo

Amber – Week 5 of 10
New to Mid Week Mojo? Get started here!

Today’s steal, the My Mind’s Eye The Sweetest Thing Tangerine Collection, is the perfect color combination for this time of year! It has all the colors and patterns for capturing your favorite spring photos. Today’s guest designer, Michelle King, shows us just how super cute this collection is, with two great sketches to inspire us all!

• • • • •

Hello there everyone! I have had so much fun and inspiration taking part in the Mid Week Mojos for over 2 years now (my how time flies)! When Kerys asked me if I wanted to put together a sketch of my own, my first thought was, “Yippee!!!” and then it was quickly followed by, “Oh my goodness, how can I compete with the incredible sketches that have been presented previously?!” Well, the fact that I was going to be able to play with My Mind’s Eye The Sweetest Thing Tangerine Collection certainly pushed me to try.

I had so much fun with the beautiful pieces in this kit. I was seriously blown away by how much awesomeness could be in one kit. Of course, that means I couldn’t do just one layout…For my first layout, I wanted to use the brilliant orange scheme that is at the forefront of the kit (have I ever mentioned how much I like orange?). I wanted to be able to show off as much of the base paper I used on this one as I could because those big flowers just make me smile. At the same time I wanted to use as many embellishments as I could because there were so many and they fit so nicely on the page without feeling like they are overwhelming. I am normally someone who does not use a lot of embellishments, but found with these pieces, I wanted to keep adding! C’mon, how darling is that crocheted flower?

Here is my first sketch (Amber #5a):

And here is my layout:

Once I finished that one, I thought I should show that the kit isn’t just “tangerine.” There are some really pretty colors in this collection. So, for my second layout I decided to use the more muted colors. The pale yellows and aqua have a nice fresh feel to them. And again, I found myself pulling out some great embellishments to finish off the look. I love the title card because that really is how my youngest is — especially the “fearless” part (I think I get more grey hairs by the day).

Here is my second sketch (Amber #5b):

And here is my layout:

I even made a cute little bookmark for a swap I am in. I used the chevron pattern and then one of the cute cards in the kit. Voilà! Instant cuteness for any avid reader out there! AND…even though I am not really a card maker, I did make what I think is a pretty darn cute one (even if I do say so myself). The fact that it turned out the way it did just goes to show I had a great spread to choose from.

I hope you all have the chance to play with the My Mind’s Eye The Sweetest Thing Tangerine Collection because I continue to sit here thinking about what else I can use it for (I’m already pondering some altered projects). Hope you have fun with the sketches and thanks for having me as a guest sketcher.
