Happy Birthday scrapbookSTEALS Blog Hop & Online Crop

This is a week of celebration, so we’re doing a little something extra! Departing a little bit from our traditional blog hop format and preparing for our online crop this evening, we have invited several of our tried and true scrapbookSTEALS.com’s fans to play along with fun challenges and inspire us along the way!

First, some business: tonight’s online crop will be from 6:00 – 8:00 Mountain Time, with a video chat from 6:30 – 7:30.  Click here to join in the live chat!

Second, our online crop challenges. Choose one or choose all, just have a blast scrapbooking! Post links to your entries here in a comment. You have until next Wednesday July 17th at 11:59 PM MT to post your entry. We’ll select a random winner from each challenge to receive some birthday scrappy goodies.  Here are your challenges along with some examples from our wonderful friends Sheryl Kloke and Minousha Bari! (entries do not need to be only layouts, f or challenges 2, 3, & 4 can be cards, mini albums, home decor – whatever strikes your fancy!)

Challenge #1 – Happy 4th Birthday – use 4 items

Use four items and ONLY four items for your project. For example on a layout my four items could be: patterned paper, ink, buttons, and twine. Now you can use multiple pattern papers and multiple colors of buttons, but NOT eyelets (since I chose buttons) or ribbon (since I chose twine).

Challenge #2 – 2009

Since we launched in 2009, do a project remembering your favorite part of the year. Choose your favorite song: Black Eyed Peas Boom Boom Pow, Lady Gaga Poker Face, Jason Maraz I’m Yours, or Taylor Swift You Belong With Me. Or your favorite movie: Star Trek, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Avatar, or Up. Or it could be the birth of a child or grandchild, a wedding, a break-up, whatever was your stand out moment for 2009.

 Challenge #3 – Favorite Vendor

Choose your favorite scrapbookSTEALS.com vendor and create a project using their products. Can you guess what manufacturers Sheryl and Minousha have chosen?

Challenge #4 – Washi Fever

Create a project using everyone’s newest obsession, washi tape. On this project you must use 4 different tapes (since we are celebrating our 4th birthday).

Finally, blog hop along to our fans and friends and see their interpretation of our challenges.  I must say, you will come back truly inspired. Visit the following blogs to see examples of the challenges. Our fans are truly amazing and we here are thrilled and humbled you are all part of our scrapbookSTEALS family!

Have a blast looking through all of these fabulous blogs, make comments and let them know if you love their creations as much as I do. See you all tonight for our online crop with We R Memory Keepers!

How To-sday | Detailed Die Cuts

I may be a little biased, but I think our design team is the best! I am loving our   Spring/Summer Design Team How To-sday posts. Today we have an awesome How To from Design Team member Candace Zentner. Candace shows us what we can do with die cuts.

Hey everyone! Candace here today! I don’t know about you, but I LOVE playing with die cuts and cutting files! My favorite thing to do with my cuts is add detail and shading for dimension. I want to share some of the techniques I use, and how you can easily make your cuts look amazing!

die cut how to 1

I cannot create a die cut without using my Colorbox Fluid Chalk ink. I add shading to almost each piece to create dimension. To add shading, I start with subtle shading by tapping my ink along the edges of each piece and add more color as I go, if needed. There are lots of brands of fluid chalk ink that can be used, and regular chalk with a pompom also works great!

On some pieces, a combination of colors can be used to achieve a more dramatic shaded look. On the yellow oval below, I added quite a bit of shading with a yellow ink then added a touch of a darker yellow right along the edge of the piece.

A lighter shade of ink can also create a neat effect. On the piece of my squirrel’s tail, I shaded with a cream color.

After I added the shading to each piece and assembled my squirrel, I used a white gelly roll pen to add some small faux stitches and doodles. My finishing touch was some Glossy Accents over the eyes and nose to give them some shine. Take a peek at the plain squirrel, with no chalking or faux stitching, compared to the squirrel with added details!

Here is how I used my little squirrel on a card!
