My favorite scrapbooking embellishments are the enamel dots made by various scrapbooking companies. I tend to use up a lot of a certain size or color, so I have a bunch of partial packages laying around unused on my scrapbooking desk. That’s why when I heard about melting beads to make your own enamel dots, I kinda went crazy and made a ton because I was so excited. Here are the supplies you need in order to make your own.

  •  Perler beads (found in the kid’s crafting area in stores)
  • or Pony beads (also found in the kid’s crafting area in stores)
  • Parchment paper
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven or Toaster Oven

Depending on which bead you choose to use, preheat your oven to the following temperature and use the following cooking times (Please note that if you choose to melt the Pony Beads, use proper ventilation in you kitchen):

Perler Beads -185° F (20- 35 minutes)

Pony Beads – 400° F (10-20 minutes)

Spread out your beads beads in a single layer one inch apart on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Put the baking sheet into the oven and set your timer to the lowest time above. Make sure you are paying attention to the progress of the beads melting. This is definitely fun, but caution is also required.

When all of the beads have melted and no longer have a dimple in the center, pull them out of the oven and allow to cool for five minutes before handling them.

Here is an example of a bead that needs to be melted longer.

This is how I organized my enamel dots after creating many batches.

Here is a before and after comparison of the different sizes of the beads and the dots they create.

These homemade enamel dots made a great embellishment for my cute little craft. I hope this inspires you to make some of these enamel dots for your own craft projects!
