Wonder World of Washi | How To’sday

When I hear the mere whispering of the word washi, my eyes glaze over just a little bit, my salivary gland kicks into gear, and my crafty brain starts revving full speed. I’ve had a lot of washi pass through my hands, and I can honestly say I don’t think any have made me as excited as today’s steal, the My Mind’s Eye—The Sweetest Thing Decorative Tapes.

I know there are a lot of washi collectors out there so I asked a few ladies to share their favorite washi projects to get that creative engine going. I think after seeing these projects today that you’ll agree there is always room for more washi!

If this isn’t the most innovative use of washi tape, I’m not sure what is! Love the play binoculars created by Heather Conklin.

Look at how Cristine Redmond uses the washi to create a fun background for this darling card.

I love how Liz Martinez created these fun embellishments with strips of washi applied to paper and then punched out with a shape punch.

And lastly our amazing Design Team Alumni Cyndee Kawa shares several different fun uses to create backgrounds for cards. I especially love the grass!

Thank you for sharing your ideas with us today ladies! I can’t wait to add today’s washi collections to my ever-growing stash and use some of these ideas.

If you have an idea you’d like to see featured as a How To’sday tutorial, don’t be shy! We want to see! Send text and photos to kristy@stealnetwork.com and I will get you added to the lineup.

Have a great day and I’ll see you tomorrow for Mid Week Mojo!

Basic Grey Curio Collection | Monday Card Madness #96

As much as I love bold, bright, graphic and fun, every now and again it feels good to pull out something with a touch of nostalgia, maturity and class. Today’s steal, the Basic Grey Curio collection, is just that. Working with this collection makes me feel as if I might just get invited to High Tea and crumpets with the Queen — even if I am a 40 year old with purple streaks in my hair. :)

I really had a great time creating with this collection and decided to keep this week’s sketch simple. I find that the simpler the better when mixing such intense paper prints. And you can knock out cards pretty darn fast too!

I particularly love the office tabs in this collection. I’m kind of addicted to tabs and banners right now, so embellishments that are self adhering and already decorated are an added bonus!

I also love the texture canvas tags add to a project.

I’m kind of excited with how these turned out! I couldn’t resist working with the papers just a little more and whipped up a couple of layouts.

Such a classy, classy collection!

I can’t believe yet another month has passed! This year is flying by a whole lot faster than I’m willing to acknowledge. And that means it’s time to announce the winner of our July Monday Card Madness participants. This month our lucky winner is Melissa Dehne.

Lifestyle Crafts Nesting Dies

Today design team member Katrina Hunt is back in the spotlight with today’s steal, Lifestyle Crafts Nesting Dies. If you’re a fan of steel dies, nesting dies are the way to go to maximize on small storage requirements and big creative options. So sit back and start your Friday off right with some pretty eye candy from Katrina.

It’s Katrina here and I can’t believe it’s already August!  I’m ready for fall because the heat here is unbelievable for Missouri — I feel like I’m in the desert! It gives me an excuse to stay in and craft though. :)

I had the chance to play with the Lifestyle Nesting Dies in the Scalloped Square shape. I used these in my Cuttlebug and they worked great. I sandwiched the A plate, C plate, nesting die, paper, and then a B plate. This cut them perfectly, even with thick, textured paper like the Authentique I used.

When I think of nesting dies I usually think of card making.  I knew I wanted to show you can do layouts with them too. I used a variety of sizes to create this layout with the Authentique Carefree collection.

I wanted to stack the squares on top of one another for a layered effect, but I also wanted some separation between the sizes. The layers are two sizes apart to show the bottom square.

I made a border strip out of negative cuts to show how to use the negative space the dies will create in your paper. I centered my first cut and then spaced out my others along the strip of paper.  I lucked out that the bee paper happened to fit in my spaces pretty well. You could also mix patterned papers to back those negative spaces.

Then I did a couple of quick cards. The largest die in the set is perfect for a fun card base.

Next, I layered the scalloped shapes to create a card. I love to layer and these are perfect for that. The dies are great for using those 6 x 6 mini pads that are everywhere these days!

I have so many ideas for these that I didn’t get to do so I am sure I will be working with them again soon. I know there are a variety of styles that are available today and I think I might have to steal a few!

Eeek! Katrina, I love it! I especially love your “School is Cool” card. Why do you ask? Because in seventeen glorious days the never ending “I’m bored” will be replaced with “I don’t want to do my homework.”  Hey, it’s a change at least, right?  :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

October Afternoon Cakewalk Collection | Mid Week Mojo

Pearl – Layout 4

Mid Week Mojo is definitely the highlight of the week. It’s such a cakewalk to use a sketch as your springboard for weekly inspiration. What’s an even bigger cakewalk is when you get to pair a darling sketch with today’s steal, the October Afternoon Cakewalk Collection. This week the incredibly talented, beautiful, and downright fun Jennifer McDermott has graciously accepted the invitation to provide a sketch and inspiration. Let’s just say you’re in for a treat!

I am so very thrilled to be the guest sketcher for August.  I started doing Mid Week Mojo with #4 and have gotten so much inspiration from Kristy and the guest sketchers since then.

When I heard I would be working with October Afternoon’s Cakewalk I may have let out a huge squeal of excitement.  It is a GORGEOUS collection and was so much fun to work with!  Here’s my first sketch:

And here’s my take on the sketch:

I thought pictures from my oldest son’s first birthday would work marvelously with the papers.

The scrappy mojo was flowing and I just had to make another layout.

This time I wanted to show how the collection can be used for more than just birthday themes, so I did this layout of my sweet Fiona girl:

Cardmakers (and wannabe cardmakers alike) will get so much usage from this collection. I whipped these cards together in record time.

I wasn’t ready to stop playing, so I fired up my Cameo and cut out this gift card holder using a Lori Whitlock file. Perfect way to dress up a boring gift card!

Thank you so much to Scrapbook Steals and the incomparable Kristy Lee for letting me take a turn as guest sketcher.  It has truly been my pleasure!

Jen, your projects are fantastic! I’m not sure if I should thank you or not for being our guest today… I sense my wallet becoming just a wee bit lighter thanks to you. :)

Honestly, it was such a joy to work with you, even if you had to deal with my crazy this month! You’re the best!

Now it’s time to announce our two lucky random winners for the Pearl #3 sketch.

Michelle Duffy, you are our first winner!

And the second lucky gal is Sara Rusek!

You girls and your layouts are amazing! It’s been a true treat this week to see the two-pagers pour in. As fearful as I am of a two-pager, I think I need to make an effort to make them more often.

Now girls, please email service@stealnetwork.com with your addresses and let them know you are this week’s winner! I hope your scrappy swag will help you create more amazing creations.

Have a great day and be sure to check in on Friday for Design Team member Katrina Hunt’s August projects!
